After an impressive performance that helped Philadelphia Union secure a valuable point against the Columbus Crew on Saturday night, Andre Blake has rightfully earned his place in the MLS Team of the Matchday.
Blake once again showcased his goalkeeping prowess, making a remarkable eight saves outside the familiar confines of Subaru Park. His exceptional performance played a crucial role in maintaining Philadelphia Union’s position in the top four of the Eastern Conference.
Five of Blake’s exceptional saves came in the first half, where the Columbus Crew relentlessly attempted to convert their home advantage into goals. However, they couldn’t breach the defenses of the three-time MLS Goalkeeper of the Year.
Blake was put to the test by the relentless Crew attack, with his string of impressive saves commencing in the 31st minute when he denied Alexandru Matan’s shot from the right side of the box. In the same minute, he conceded a corner, followed by a spectacular dive to thwart a shot from Hernández, which narrowly missed the net. In the 34th minute, he denied Hernandez once again, stopping a shot from the center of the box, and then made another crucial save in the 37th minute, this time denying Yaw Yeboah’s shot aimed at the bottom left corner.
This latest recognition adds to Philadelphia Union’s impressive list of nine different players honored in 2023, including Julian Carranza, Daniel Gazdag, Jakob Glesnes, Mikeal Uhre, Damion Lowe, Kai Wagner, Jose Martinez, Jack Elliott, and now, Andre Blake.
Philadelphia Union will return to action on Wednesday night when they host Atlanta United FC in a match presented by Widener University. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 PM ET, exclusively available on MLS Season Pass via Apple TV.
